What is Liberty?

Liberty is a fast-playing wargame covering the American Revolution from 1775-1783. It is we feel the perfect blend of scale, ease of play, and accuracy. British, American, and French forces are included and the role of the Indians and Navies is depicted. The unique problems faced by each side become clear in this exciting game.

The “Columbia Block System

Liberty is a Columbia Block System game. The game information for each piece is facing the player, but not the opponent! This allows a “fog-of-war” aspect of play that allows an extra layer of subtlety to gameplay. It allows for feints, bluffs, and outright surprises!

Also, it has a step reduction system built into place as well! As units take damage, they simply are rotated to show their new strength. It is an innovative design that has been a fan favorite of gamers in the know for years!

What others say about Liberty

Excellent introduction to Columbia block wargame. extremely replayable and easy to teach but still has enough complexity for the more hardcore audience to enjoy. I highly recommend the optional rules as they add more flavor to the game

My favourite wargame. The perfect balance of asymmetrical forces with polar opposite objectives. Intricate game design that provides an appreciation of 18th century warfare.

One of Columbia Games rules light publications, and shines with the hex based system. Easy to play and difficult to master. I love the addition of warships/naval combat, but personally favour optional rules for French Entry.

I love this game. It is an easy-to-learn simulation of the American Revolution, with the fog of war afforded by block games and just enough subtlely to make it interesting without being overly complex. It does a great job integrating the French and Indians, as well as naval warfare, and it offeres lots of options and replay value. An excellent companion to Hammer of the Scots and a great game to play when you want a wargame without a big commitment in time, space or learning cumbersome rules.

Another fantastic Columbia block game! Very well balanced, great for new players and experienced players alike. As someone who is colorblind, I found the green/tan blocks that came with the game to be indistinguishable from one another, but Grant at Columbia Games furnished me with a new set of black and white blocks. Columbia’s customer service is second to none!

Simple to understand and presents a solid strategic overview of the revolution. By basing much of the tactical maneuver around capture and control of ports and major supply points, this game hits a sweet spot of being easy to grasp and play in a very short time period, while still presenting the historical puzzle that the British had to solve. Very well done.

Columbia block games are becoming the most cherished games in my collection. I owned 5 that use the Hammer of the Scots system and I’m impressed how each one feels different and historical. Liberty is a tense game with a lot of strategic choices for both sides.
