The eastern front in WW II was a vast seesaw of destruction and there are plenty of games and books about grand strategy and novel tactics. One book that gives the feel of men and machines on the ground is Panzer Warfare on the Eastern Front. The author Hans Schaufler served in a Panzer division and avoids strategy to concentrate on diaries and interviews with tankers and infantrymen battling the enemy and the elements. A bit one-sided but a compelling read.
