A follow-up by Mr. Ambrose is Citizen Soldiers which follows the ordinary grunts of the US Army from Normandy through the grim winter of the Bulge battles and ultimately the defeat and surrender of the remaining German forces. Again using interviews with veterans, the author’s point of view is always the guys in the trenches. These books have favorable comments from heavy hitters like Joseph Heller and Ken Burns.
