Victory Map 7 Strategy Notes
Strategy notes assume the "A" is placed in the lower left corner.
Two peninsulas separated by mountainous narrows border the Sable Sea. Resource production on one of the land areas invites scenario builders to get creative. Players should also notice the three areas with shoals that constrict naval and/or amphibious operations.
Attack
At attack from the North seems simple and straightforward – come across the land and attack either Ozgata or Vizkara. Vizkara might be the easier target for two reasons. First, it is a port city, so an attacker can plan ahead and work to achieve a naval superiority or at best, a blockade. Secondly, it is the furthest away from any other supporting cities. Both cutting the road network and isolating it through a blockade should make Vizkara quite easy to capture. An alternative strategy from the North is to make an amphibious and/or airborne attempt (if in range) on the city of Bursa. This city is also relatively isolated. An attacker might try to make it appear that a conventional attack on the mainland is imminent so as to draw enemy forces away from Bursa. If this is successful, it will add another port and airbase to assist in further attacks on the mainland.
From the South, an attacker has quite a few more options. Obviously an amphibious and/or airborne attack is going to be necessary. This being the case, it will be important to use the fog of war to your advantage. Given the large expanse of ocean to cover, it will be difficult for your opponent to adequately defend every available coastal hex. You must put a sizable armada to sea and spread it thin, forcing him to guess as to where your forces are and where the attack is to occur. Once you have gotten close, focus your attack on one or preferably two areas. This tactic, as well as using small ships as “speedbumps” to will reduce the defender's ability to respond in force. Of course, it will also be necessary to keep forces in reserve to follow-up on your invasion(s).
Defense
Defense on this map is rather tricky. There are three somewhat isolated cities to protect, as well as the resource hex. The island with the city of Bursa and the resource hex/town of Kaman could prove problematic, as the road does not connect the two over the mountain. A player should be especially careful to plan ahead if an attack seems imminent, as a quick response over the mountain will not be possible. In addition, the narrows at the Helles can be both a blessing and a curse. An attacker may attempt to “bottle” up the narrows with a ship or two and limit the defender’s ability to attack or bring reinforcements out to the rest of the map. It might be wise to take the precaution of moving units there before the attacker is given this opportunity.
