A Note from the Designer
I would like to thank Dieter Schlaepfer for putting together this well-organized and lavishly illustrated Playbook. It should prove a great boon for players learning the game, serving as an intuitive complement to the necessarily "legalistic" rulebook. Despite being designed 40 years ago and having a totally unique game system, RitD is still being played and is still rated one of BoardGameGeeks Top 100 Wargames. It was designed to emphasize surprise, bluff, and nerve, yielding tense and exciting games. Its relative emphasis on logistics as compared to combat, and on maintaining reserves are also notable. Many of the concepts in the game stemmed from Liddel-Hart's ideas about "tempo" and keeping the opponent off-balance. All these factors were particularly important in the desert terrain of North Africa where mobility and visibility were relatively unrestricted, and of course Erwin Rommel was a master of military psychology. I hope this excellent Playbook will help players new and old to more easily grasp and retain the elements of this unique game system, and that they will enjoy many hours of quality entertainment making use of that understanding.
