Most of us have seen or heard of the
long-running TV Show, The Family Feud.
Many of us made a mental connection between feuding
and feudalism when we FIRST heard that ISM.
While it certainly is true that Hârnic politics and
the European middle-ages involved a lot of family
feuding, the root of the word feudal is quite
different.
Its French counterpart is féodalisme but the cognate
is easier to spot when we use the derivative French
term féodalité...
It’s not much of a stretch from féodalité to
fidelity - which means truth, integrity, and a
refers to a commitment to honor a feudal promise
(land for service). This is remarkably
different from a feud.
Another medieval term that is easier to understand
from its French origin, is “Homage”. This
comes from the french Homme, which means man and
thus the concept of homage is honoring another man
(or woman).
Language is fascinating, isn’t it? In case you’re

and history of Hârn and the entire adjacent
